Revolution 2020 - Chetan Bhagat : Review

A rag to riches story of a guy hoping to meet his IIT-AIEEE dreams who could not eventually crack either of those and end up being a director of a private engineering college.

The book portrays a insight of rapidly growing private engineering colleges and the politics behind their establishment.  But we are all well aware of such facts, isn’t it? Well, Chetan Bhagat could not please me. There was a huge expectation out of this book considering the hype going on behind it.

The protagonist, Gopal Mishra a son of a poor and dying farmer failed to obtain a government engineering college seat by a whisker set out to make his luck better by joining engineering coaching class in Kota, Rajasthan.  Managing life in Kota all alone didn’t seemed easy for him. Choosing coaching class, getting lodged, managing money and most prominently making the girl whom he loved to adore him took his toll and couldn’t live upto his expectation and eventually lost the rat race.

Came back home to Varanasi, withered and torn he had nothing to do and nowhere to go.  He was impatient to make big money to pay back the loans which his father took and by chance of luck he met a  bunch of high-handed people who led him to establish  a engineering college in his ancestral farm land and make him its director. In the midst of all this he became egoistical and tried to please his childhood sweetheart. While his sweetheart is smitten by one of his school-classmate who happens to be a journalist who wanted to bring a revolution against corruption and political influence in working of the public offices.  Conflicts rose between both of them and slowly things turned sour.

Expanding the romantic part of the book :

Kaise bataye kyun tujhko chahe
Yaara bata na paaye
Baatein dilon ki dekho zuban ki aankhein tujhe samjhayen

Must have heard this song from the movie  Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani? Well,  this song sums up the romantic affliction Gopal undergoes, I don’t feel the necessity to divulge more. Aarti and Gopal are best friends and he adores her right from 5th Grade. Many a times Gopal tried to explain her his undying love but every time Aarti ignores his emotional stir. Well at the end Gopal  eventually convinced her to be his soul mate but he messes up everything for some futile reasons.

To sum up, the story line didn’t convinced me. Too sluggish and predictable like stereotypical Bollywood flicks and it lacked the typical Chetan Bhagat page turner aura.
